6 Types Of Heating Systems In 2020 | Home Improvement Proff

Almost every home in North America has one or other kind of heating system. There are several types and within each type there are variations. Some of them share a few components with the cooling systems while others are working as separate systems.

The primary function of each type is about harnessing heat from a fuel source and transferring it to the living space. They can use a variety of fuel sources. If you are curious to learn about the different types of heating systems and their basic characteristics you are in the right place.

Let us dive into the brief details of 6 types of heating systems.

1. Furnaces

Heat furnaces work by blowing heated air through ducts that deliver the warm air throughout the house via a grill. Forced warm air distribution systems are the most commonly used systems. The fuel source can be natural gas, fuel oil, or electricity. This type of heating system is also called a ducted warm air distribution system.

2. Heat Pumps

Heat pumps have dual functionality. They scavenge heat from relatively cooler environments to the inside of the house during winters. Whereas in summers they pump heat from cooler insides to the outside. They use forced warm-air delivery systems to keep the indoors at comfortable temperatures.

3. Boilers

As the name suggests, the heating system uses boiling water. Instead of warm air, it distributes hot water in ducts embedded in the walls. As the hot water dissipates the heat in the environment it returns to the boiler to regain energy. Oil and natural gas are the most commonly used fuel sources for boilers.

4. Hybrid Heating

The hybrid heating systems are quite efficient as they combine the characteristics of heat pumps and furnaces. In normal conditions, the heat pump works well to keep your home at comfortable temperatures. The furnace kicks in only in the extreme temperatures. The combination is very important for energy-efficient homes.

5. Ductless Mini-Split

All of the above-mentioned systems use ducts. As the name suggests you will not need to install a duct system for the ductless mini-split. The system is energy efficient as it allows to you make separate zones with their thermostats. It is easy to control the temperature of a specific area as compared to central heating systems. This type of heating system is easier to manage and its repair cost isn't that much.

6. Radiant Floor Heating

The radiant floor heating system is one of the most efficient types of heating systems. It sends hot water or air through the special tubes in floors, walls, and ceiling. The fuel can be oil, gas, or electricity. The best thing about the radiant heating system is that it is highly controllable and can last for years. The drawbacks include expensive repairs and costly installations.

There's another type of heating system that was impossible to cover in one article so I have published a different article for geothermal heating and cooling systems and how they might benefit you.
